ASHEVILLE -- Studies have shown that the health benefits of volunteering include lower blood pressure, a boost in happiness, improved mental wellbeing and much more.  Volunteering is not only good for our health, but also a solid way to build community, fellowship, and friendship.

A free lunch event to learn more about volunteer opportunities in Western North Carolina, is being held on Thursday, April 6 at:

Council on Aging for Henderson County, 105 King Creek Blvd, Hendersonville, NC 28792
Generations Ashe, 180 ChattyRob Lane, West Jefferson, NC 28694 Land of Sky Regional Council, 339 New Leicester Hwy, Suite 140, Asheville, NC 28806
Maple Crest Apartments, Maple Crest, 20 Lee Garden Ln, Asheville, NC 28801, Community Room, Building C
McDowell County Council on Aging, 100 Spaulding Rd, Marion, NC 28752

The session is hosted by AARP North Carolina, and sponsored by Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Inclusion, Alzheimer’s Association, AmeiCorps Seniors, YWCA Asheville, Council on Aging Buncombe County, Council on Aging Henderson County, McDowell Senior Center, Meals on Wheels Asheville and Buncombe County and Generations.

AARP volunteer Gretchen Batra explains, “By getting to know and appreciate what’s in our surrounding community, we have more opportunities to break out of isolating situations—or break out of our own shells by sharing our sense of purpose and the joy of serving others.”

Participants at this event will hear from author Val Walker directly, connect with others who have similar interests, and meet the volunteer coordinators with the sponsoring local organizations.

There will be virtual and in-person options throughout Western North Carolina. Those who attend in person will receive the added benefit of lunch provided by AARP. Building Community Through Volunteering: Lunch with The Author Join us In-Person or Virtually - Thursday, April 6, 1:00 - 2:30 P.M.
