Because elected city officials greatly affect the day-to-day lives of their citizens, it is important to educate yourself about the candidates to find out whether their positions will best enable you to benefit from the city where you live. As the Brownsville mayoral election approaches, AARP in Brownsville has teamed up with CBS 4 and valleycentral.com to sponsor a mayoral debate between three Brownsville candidates.

The debate on Thursday, April 18, is focused on issues that matter to Brownsville’s 50-plus population and their families and will detail how each candidate will make Brownsville more livable for residents of all ages. CBS 4 News anchor Dan Joseph and award-winning television journalist Patricia Guillermo will moderate the event.

Everyone in the Brownsville community is encouraged to attend the debate and see the candidates speak in person at the Brownsville Event Center, 1 Events Center. Things kick off with a registration at 5:30 p.m., the debate itself will run from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. And if it takes more than a free event to get you in the door, free refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will also be available for attendees. To reserve your spot, reach out to 1-877-926-8300, or visit aarp.cvent.com/BRO-Mayoral-Forum.

But if you cannot attend the event, don’t worry! There are two other ways to catch the debate. A working computer and connection to the internet will let you watch a livestream of entire 90-minute debate by visiting our AARP Texas Facebook page or valleycentral.com. For those who rather invite friends and family over and have a watch party of the event, the debate will also be broadcast on CBS 4 on Saturday, April 20, at noon. Just in time for an early morning cookout before the big event.

AARP also wants to make sure that your voice is heard. So, whether you attend in person, watch online, or tune in to Saturday’s CBS showing, everyone has the chance to ask the three Brownsville mayoral candidates a question. You can submit your question on our AARP Texas Facebook page, or send an email to aarptx@aarp.org. This is a great way to make sure the issues that are important to you are addressed. It also gives you a chance to get to know your candidates better.

No matter how you choose to be involved with this event, taking part in the Brownsville mayoral debate will help you make a more educated vote. Learning about the candidates who will affect your city and your daily life is the best way to find the candidate who is right for you.
