The goal of the 2020 Census is to count everyone once, only once and in the right place. The Census Bureau will continue to improve its use of mobile technology, geospatial innovations, and internet self-response.
Who or what is the Census?
The United States Census Bureau (USCB; officially the Bureau of the Census) is a principal agency responsible for producing data about the American people and economy. The Census Bureau is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce and its director is appointed by the President of the United States.
The Census Bureau’s primary mission is conducting the U.S. Census every ten years, which allocates the seats of the U.S. House of Representatives to the states based on their population. The Bureau’s various censuses and surveys help allocate billions in federal funds every year and it helps states, local communities, and businesses make informed decisions. The information provided by the census informs decisions on where to build and maintain schools, hospitals, transportation infrastructure, and police and fire departments.
How much has the Census meant to Arizona in the last 10 years?
Based on data analyzed from 2015 by George Washington University, Arizona received over $13 billion in federal funds for all those counted. That means that for every person counted (or missed) Arizona received (or did not receive) $1,989 per year for 10 years. Arizona’s population had increased a lot in just the past five years, so you can see why counting everyone is important to the quality of life for people in our state.
How often does the Census happen?
Since 1792, the US Constitution has mandated a complete count every ten years of everyone residing in the country for congressional apportionment and for allocation of federal tax dollars. The next decennial (or every ten year) census will take place on April 1, 2020.
