Calling athletes of all ages: AARP in Jacksonville and the First Coast YMCA are sponsoring a challenge. Inspired by TVâs Amazing Race, the local competition will involve teams of six people, with each teammate representing a decade of age from the 30s to the 80s. Each team will cooperatively face tests of physical and mental agility.
The race is designed to promote healthy living at every age and to disrupt aging by breaking down stereotypes and promoting understanding between generations. Teammates are training at local YMCAs to prepare for the big day.
The race will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Winston Family YMCA, 221 Riverside Ave. Each team will travel together to locations throughout downtown Jacksonville and on both sides of the St. Johns River. At each destination they will be assigned a surprise physical or mental challenge requiring communication and teamwork. Judges will certify their performance.
More than $2,000 worth of prizes will go to the first, second and third teams to cross the finish line. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a medal.
Although the race is not a spectator event, family and friends can follow on social media, and volunteers are needed at every location along the route. Go to aarp.cvent.com/oneamazingadventure or call AARP at 866-595-7678 toll-free to get involved. âDAVE MONTGOMERY
