Are You Ready to Retire?

Posted on 07/12/21 by Joyce De Monnin

Free workshop aims to help Oregonians assess retirement readiness – and take action to prepare and plan ahead

A staggering number of Oregonians ages 50-64 may not be able to afford retirement.

According to the most recent National Retirement Readiness Index half of today’s households will not have enough retirement income to maintain their pre-retirement standard of living.*

With approximately 1.3 million Oregonians between the ages of 50 to 64, that means more than 600,000 Oregonians are at risk of lowering their standard of living – even entering poverty – after retirement. According to Investopedia, the average 401(k) balance is about $160,000.

AARP Oregon is hosting a free 90-minute workshop July 28 with the Oregon Dept. of Consumer & Business Services (DCBS) to help people make sure they are ready to retire. This interactive workshop will explore what we need to do 10 years, 5 years and 1 year ahead of retirement, but offers sage advice for people of all ages to plan.

AARP is committed to helping people achieve a brighter, more secure future for individuals and their families. We know that planning ahead for retirement can be a challenging task, so we’re breaking it down into milestones individuals can achieve to help them chart their path.

Those milestones can range from finding a certified financial planner to deciding when to claim Social Security or even paying off a credit card.

Each financial milestone you reach, big or small, helps you prepare for retirement and leave a greater legacy for your family. There are plenty of options to help people prepare, even if they are behind. That may mean downsizing, working a little longer, or finding a part-time job after retirement from your primary career.

In addition to speakers from AARP and DCBS, financial planner Brent Hunsberger and retirement industry expert Lisa Massena will offer tips and tools to help people start crafting their retirement plans.
