Even if you’re not required to file a state tax return this year, you may want to.
Many low-income Maine residents are eligible for the state’s tax fairness credits. For the 2022 tax year, the maximum Property Tax Fairness Credit is $1,000 (or $1,500 for those 65 or older); the maximum Sales Tax Fairness Credit is $240.
The only way to get these credits is by filing a Maine tax return. If the credit you’re eligible for is greater than the taxes owed, the excess will be refunded to you.
The deadline to file taxes is April 18. AARP Foundation Tax- Aide offers free tax preparation and filing services. Assistance is available virtually and in person at locations across the state through mid-April.
To find a location or learn more, visit states.aarp.org/ maine/tax-aide, email taxaide@ aarp.org or call 888-227-7669.
