An AARP Volunteer's Perspective

When my son Douglas Tayek, Associate State Director of Outreach for AARP Ohio asked if I would be interested in volunteering for AARP I was hesitant.  My time was consumed by my teaching job and family. But I also knew that retirement was on the horizon and volunteering for AARP could bring some personal satisfaction to me when I would no longer be teaching children. So, I started out slowly, working occasional events in northern Ohio.

What I have discovered is that my AARP volunteerism not only brings me the personal satisfaction of helping other older Americans, but I have met so many wonderful people and made lots of new friends!  I have the growth mindset I tried to instill in my students as I learn about AARP programs, so I can help other people avoid fraud and scams, remain safely in their homes in later years, learn about AARP’s commitment to making our cities livable, viable communities and reaching out to special groups like our nation’s veterans with special programs.

My current role as a legislative advocacy lead for the Cleveland area makes me aware of the impact we all can have on legislation in Columbus and Washington D.C. Soon I will also be involved in social media as well.

An added benefit to my AARP volunteerism is the time I’ve spent working side-by-side with my son.  My volunteer time with AARP continues to evolve and change and I like that.  Retirement?  What’s that!
