Fairbanks Community Action Volunteers
AARP Alaska’s volunteer team in Fairbanks is working on building a better community for residents of all ages. Fairbanks joined the Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities in January 2024 as the 849th community in the network. Volunteers in Fairbanks are engaging with community partners, city and borough planners, and community service agencies to form a leadership team. They will now collect community input on Fairbanks' age-friendly assets and areas for growth. Listening sessions and presentations are scheduled for spring and summer with pop-up projects for enhancing public recreational spaces and trails in the downtown area. We thank our Fairbanks team and look forward to the continued work on livability!
Mat-Su Community Action Team
Our Mat-Su Community Action Team has chosen caregiving as their focus for 2024. The team is assembling caregiver kits with AARP resources and comfort items for self-care. The group's event tabling will feature digital tools to share and gather caregiver stories (via https://aarp.org/iheartcaregivers). We thank our Mat-Su CAT for their support of caregivers in our community!
Anchorage Community Action Team
Anchorage is a new community presence site for AARP Alaska in 2024. We have a local Community Coordinator with experience in non-profit leadership, volunteerism, and community engagement. Members of this new volunteer team recently hosted a Movies for Grownups screening and are engaged in event planning and outreach for 2024. We look forward to expanding our community impact with this new volunteer team!
Juneau Community Action Team
AARP Alaska’s Juneau volunteers are a Community Action Team focused on creating a more livable city as a member of the Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. As part of that effort, the team is gathering community input and working with community partners to build support for livability and enhance walkability for residents. We're grateful to our Juneau team for spearheading this effort!
AARP Alaska Advocacy volunteers
AARP advocacy volunteers help influence legislation and public policy on AARP priority issues including caregiving and financial resilience. Volunteers from all over the state participate in virtual meetings to get updates on bills and budget issues, share information, and learn how to take action as advocates. Volunteers take action by sending emails, testifying on a bill by telephone, meeting with legislators, or attending public meetings. We thank our AARP advocates for helping us make Alaska a better state for all Alaskans.
