Advocating for Improved Health Care Services

Posted on 06/30/23 by The AARP Bulletin

Several state laws passed this year are aimed at improving the quality of and access to health care.

Among the laws—for which AARP Kentucky strongly advocated—are those that do the following:

  • Modernize prescriptive authority for advanced practice registered nurses to help increase access to health care for Kentuckians.
  • Require Kentucky Medigap insurers to offer coverage to people under age 65 who are eligible for Medicare because of a disability.
  • Compel the state Office of the Inspector General to develop standards for assisted-living facilities.

The legislature also increased funding for health care workforce education.

AARP Kentucky’s advocacy volunteers played a key role in championing the bills during the 2023 legislative session. They held dozens of meetings with lawmakers and attended committee hearings. Learn about volunteering at aarp.org/ky.
