AARP’s Driver Safety Course Refreshes Safe Driving Practices

Posted on 03/20/23

The AARP Las Cruces Chapter announces new schedule for the Safe Driver Program.

The AARP Safe Driver Course is not the same as the one you may have taken as a teenager. The course concentrates on the changes in a person’s body as they age as well as updates drivers on all the changes that have taken place since they may have first received their license.

It includes items like rules for new roadways, interchanges, stoplights and pedestrian warnings, the “Four Second” rule, and the technology in today’s vehicle.

In addition, the course provides participants with a certificate, good for three years, to receive a discount on your auto insurance. The discount amount varies depending on the insurance company but is mandated by state law. The four-hour course is available to anyone over age 50.

The courses in Las Cruces are available on the second Tuesday and second Thursday of the month, currently scheduled through June.

  • The Tuesday Course is at St. Paul’s Methodist Church (225 W Griggs).
  • The Thursday course is at City Hall, Room 2007A.

Time for both courses is 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Participants may bring their own water and snacks if desired.
The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members.

Interested individuals can call 760-505-4757 for information and to register, and 317-385-8874 for information only.
