Posted on 11/16/21

Richmond, VA – Mattie Lawrence Johnson has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2021 AARP Virginia Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.

AARP Virginia selected Lawrence Johnson for her remarkable service, which has greatly benefited her community in Chesapeake, reflected AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. The award will be formally presented to her at a ceremony in April 2022. To honor Lawrence Johnson, AARP Virginia will also make a $250 donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and a $250 donation to The Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia.

“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says AARP Virginia State Director Jim Dau. “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”

Lawrence Johnson volunteers with several organizations in Southeastern Virginia including the Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, the Alzheimer’s Association, Bayside High School, Zeta Phi Beta Incorporated and AARP Virginia. She also serves as an Officer of Elections for the City of Chesapeake and she is a loving caregiver for her husband Ralph Johnson.

Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
