AARP Texas Statement on Passing of Luis Alonso Wilmot

Posted on 06/06/19 by Mark Hollis

AARP Texas Director Bob Jackson released the following statement today in reaction to the news of the passing of Luis Alonso Wilmot of San Antonio, who served as the AARP Texas Director from 2002 to 2007:

“We grieve the loss of Luis Wilmot, a beloved champion for the needs of others. At AARP, we remember him as a lifelong and passionate advocate who fought with dedication for many civil rights and consumers causes, as well as the needs of older Americans.

“As an attorney, a great communicator, and a descendant of highly regarded civil rights leaders, Luis used his education, personal connections, and talents as a legal mind and people manager in countless ways to improve the lives of ordinary Texans.

“During his tenure at AARP, Luis succeeded in building lasting ties to other organizations, especially ones that promote and protect Hispanic civil rights in the areas of education, employment, immigration and voting rights; and he brought together groups that continue today to champion consumer causes. He also strengthened AARP Texas’ relationships with state and local public officials, policymakers, corporate leaders, and heads of academic organizations.

“Before coming to AARP, Luis was an executive director for the Partnership for a Competitive Texas, served as a regional counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), and worked as a public counsel for the Texas Office of Public Utility Counsel, a lawyer for several other entities, including the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and served on boards of numerous advocacy groups. Later in his career, he served as a counsel at the Texas Dow Employee Credit Union.

“On behalf of the 2.3 million members of AARP Texas, as well as our staff and volunteers, I extend our sincerest sympathies to the Wilmot family.”
