AARP Texas Director Tina Tran issued the following statement in response to the Texas governor’s proclamation limiting the number of drop-off locations for mail-in ballots:

“AARP Texas has worked tirelessly this year at informing our members and all older Texans about the importance of voting and instructing citizens on how to vote safely during the pandemic. For months, we have provided essential and nonpartisan information to our membership about voter registration and the voting options, such as mail-in ballots, early voting, and in-person Election Day voting.

“We welcomed wholeheartedly Governor Abbott’s earlier decision to expand the number of days of early voting in Texas. More voting days will undoubtedly help the age 50+ community and others to cast their votes safely and possibly avoid long lines at voting sites. But we are deeply concerned by the decision to limit the number of drop-off locations for mail-in ballots. The move will likely impede the ability for many voters to deliver their ballots safely. We hope that Governor Abbott will reconsider.

“During a pandemic, now more than ever, older voters need confidence that they can vote safely. Texas voters, especially those 50-plus, do not need another impediment to voting.”
