AARP Texas Statement on Dementia Initiative Announced by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick
AUSTIN, Texas – AARP Texas Director Tina Tran released the following statement in response to today’s announcement by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick of a new legislative initiative and state constitutional amendment proposal focused on dementia:
“AARP Texas wholeheartedly applauds and supports the announcement by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick of a new legislative initiative focused on dementia. Two-thirds of Americans have at least one major potential risk factor for dementia, and its related diseases, including Alzheimer’s, affects over 55 million people globally, including at least 6 million in the United States. Much is still unknown about factors that may influence dementia risk, including our environment, health and lifestyle.
“A stronger state focus on dementia will bring to light vital information to promote healthier brains and empower people to lower their own risks, potentially delaying dementia onset and fostering healthy aging. As Lieutenant Governor Patrick has stated, a major investment for decades in dementia research will draw leading researchers and companies to Texas, and this development will surely make progress on treatments and cures for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
“AARP has long advocated for more research on brain health and dementia, and this latest Texas legislative announcement is a welcomed move that can bring significant improvement to the lives and livelihoods of all Texans and many others around the world.
“AARP Texas looks forward to lending its support to the Dementia Prevention Research Institute of Texas. Texans suffering from dementia and those who care for them deserve the best options when combatting this nefarious disease.”
