AARP Texas is Seeking Advocacy Volunteers

Posted on 11/12/24 by Mark Hollis

From fighting for new laws that help family caregivers to advocating for a solid future for Social Security, the 89-year-old program that provides retirement, disability and survivor benefits for millions of Americans, AARP is a strong, nonpartisan proponent for positive social change on a host of issues that matter to older Texans and their families.

With 2.5 million AARP members throughout Texas, AARP is an impactful mission-driven membership organization that relies on a powerful corps of volunteers to tell their stories and to educate lawmakers, the news media and the public.

During the 2025 Texas legislative session, AARP Texas, with the help of volunteers and staff, will lead the fight for vital reforms to:

  • Prevent and fight elder exploitation and fraud, including consumer protections for solar panel contracts and curtailing common scams like identity theft;
  • Strengthen emergency response and preparedness, including requiring long-term care facilities to have functioning on-site backup power;
  • Improve quality and access to healthcare and long-term care; and
  • Bolster the financial security for older Texans, including new efforts to increase affordable housing and ensuring that homeowners insurance is affordable and available.

But there’s so much more that AARP volunteers have a hand in accomplishing each and every year. Together, we work on an array of important issues, including:

  • Leading efforts to strengthen Social Security and support retirement savings to help everyone achieve lifetime financial security;
  • Promoting adequate, affordable health care including prescription drugs, long-term care, and support for family caregivers; and
  • Fostering communities with affordable and appropriate housing, supportive community features, safe driving and mobility options.

In preparation for our work in 2025, we are recruiting volunteers with interest and expertise in healthcare, utilities, housing, and infrastructure policy.

AARP Texas is also seeking volunteers with lived experience as family caregivers or victims of fraud. Additionally, we are eager to recruit new volunteers in rural areas. All meetings are held virtually. Prior public policy experience is not required
