AARP Seeks New Volunteer State President

AARP New Mexico seeks applications for a new State President, a volunteer position that helps guide the work that AARP does in the state.
“At AARP New Mexico, a central part of our team is our volunteers,” said Joseph P. Sanchez, AARP New Mexico State Director. “We have about 120 volunteers around the state that work on a variety of issues and events.”

AARP New Mexico has a core group of volunteers that work on advocacy issues at the state and federal level, testifying on bills at the state Legislature and bringing concerns and issues to the Congressional Delegation. Other volunteers share information and resources, often in their own communities, on topics like caregiving, fraud prevention, and Medicare; while also leading fun events likes Movies for Grownups; managing information tables at community events; and working with local officials on making communities more livable, places where people can age in place. 

“The state president positon is essentially our lead volunteer, acting as a partner to the state director and the rest of the staff, while helping to manage our volunteer activities and engagement. This person also will act as a spokesperson and one of the faces of AARP New Mexico at events and sometimes with the media,” Sanchez said.

Some of the other responsibilities for the state president include:

• Working in partnership with the state director, provides vision and leadership on AARP activities.
• Chairs the state Executive Council, a volunteer advisory committee.
• Works with the state director and the Executive Council, to develop the framework for state strategic planning and coordination of AARP activities.
• Assists in recruitment of other volunteers.
  

Qualifications include:

• A commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP.
• Demonstrates strategic thinking and planning abilities.
• Has leadership and team building abilities.
• Shows strong interpersonal skills -- understanding group dynamics and skill in facilitating groups.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• An AARP membership is required.
  

A state president’s term is two-years and can be renewed twice but not to exceed six years.
