AARP SD Helps to Expand the Reach of the Rural Dementia Caregiver Project

Posted on 06/04/20

Do you live a rural area and care for someone with memory loss? Millions of rural caregivers provide crucial support to loved ones living with memory loss, Alzheimer's or other dementia. These same caregivers often feel stressed and isolated as they try to find services and support for their loved one and themselves, particularly during these unprecedented times. An online workshop may be able to help. AARP SD is helping to expand the reach of a study being done by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco who are looking for family caregivers to participate in an online workshop and study.

What does the online workshop offer?
The workshop is accessible to rural caregivers whenever they want it, day or night. It teaches caregivers new skills to reduce their stress, take better care of themselves, manage difficult behaviors of their loved ones, and plan for the future. Caregivers also get a caregiver handbook to keep, support from other caregivers and trained staff, and information on community resources. Caregivers receive up to $80 in cash for completing 4 study surveys.

How can caregivers and others learn more?
If you are a caregiver living in a rural area, caring for someone with memory loss for at least 10 hours per week, and are 18 years of age or older, you may qualify. Interested caregivers can go to caregiverproject.ucsf.edu or call the toll-free number 1-833-634-0603 to get more information.

Organizations that work in rural communities or have contact with caregivers and would like more information can use that same contact information.
