AARP Reveals New Hampshire’s Top Livable Communities
As AARP marks the 10th anniversary of its Livability Index™, we’re shining a spotlight on the Granite State communities that scored highest for quality of life. This web-based tool is the most comprehensive of its kind, rating neighborhoods across all 50 states and the District of Columbia on the services and amenities that make life better for everyone.
So, who made the list?
Portsmouth, Hanover, Exeter, Keene, Concord, Lebanon, Newmarket, Pembroke, Dover, Plaistow, and Manchester lead the way in New Hampshire.
These communities have made impressive strides—think greener spaces and more walkable streets—but there’s still work to do. Affordable housing and accessibility for those with mobility challenges remain top priorities to ensure people can age in place comfortably.
“The AARP Livability Index provides people throughout New Hampshire with the information they need to create vibrant and welcoming environments for people of all ages,” says AARP NH State Director Christina FitzPatrick. “We look forward to working with local leaders to innovate and adapt to help people thrive.”
What Makes a Community Livable?
The Livability Index looks at seven key categories:
- Housing
- Neighborhood
- Transportation
- Environment
- Health
- Engagement
- Opportunity
Using more than 50 national data sources and 61 indicators—from housing costs to transportation access—the tool helps residents and planners identify strengths and challenges. You can even search by address or ZIP code to see how your community stacks up.
AARP NH's Commitment
Over the past three years, AARP NH has invested $215,000 through Community Challenge Grants, funding 20 projects to boost livability. Nineteen communities have joined the Age-Friendly Network, working together to improve transportation, housing, and social engagement. We’ve also championed legislation supporting Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), giving families more flexible housing options to care for loved ones.
