Bethlehem, Pennsylvania – AARP Pennsylvania leadership and staff recently presented Ron and Milly Laible with the Andrus Award at a small, intimate luncheon. In October, Ron and Milly were selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2021 AARP Pennsylvania Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award.
For nearly half a decade, Ron and Milly have been an integral part of AARP Pennsylvania’s volunteer team. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the lack of social interaction that AARP members and volunteers have been accustomed proved to be challenging, and oftentimes frustrating, for many. Ron and Milly responded by recommending new and innovative engagement and socialization ideas to their AARP volunteer teammates and Kellie VonStein, AARP Associate State Director for Outreach and Advocacy in the Lehigh Valley. As a result, Moving with Milly - a weekly, virtual exercise class - was born. For a little over a year, Moving with Milly has not only grown in popularity, but it has engaged, inspired, and motivated AARP members across the country with over 250 people regularly participating.
“Dr. Andrus changed America’s conversation about aging. By focusing on solutions, opportunities, and upending negative stereotypes, Dr. Andrus engaged Americans to serve, not to be served,” said State President Grossi. “This award represents the contributions individuals can make in their communities and the positive impact they can achieve and we are so grateful for Ron and Milly as they share their time and talent in service to others.”
Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community in or for which the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
