In celebration of Black History Month, AARP Pennsylvania proudly partnered with the African American Children’s Book Fair. With the support of 16 AARP Philadelphia volunteers, the event was a success, drawing in over 1,500 attendees and connecting with 12 individuals interested in future volunteering.

The event welcomed notable officials, including Council President Kenyatta Johnson, Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson, State Senator Sheriff Street (who became an AARP member at the event), and Councilmember Anthony Phillips. Our volunteers were pivotal, serving as Literary Row Ambassadors, Sponsor’s Ambassadors, and managing the bookstore section, ensuring a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

Yocasta Lora, AARP Pennsylvania Associate State Director of Community Outreach in Philadelphia, reflected on the event’s success, stating, "This fair not only celebrates the rich diversity of African American literature but also strengthens our community bonds. Seeing so many dedicated volunteers and community leaders unite to support literacy and cultural heritage is truly inspiring."

This event underscores AARP Pennsylvania's commitment to building livable communities through inclusive activities, enhancing literacy, and honoring the diverse cultural heritage of Philadelphia. We are deeply grateful to all the volunteers, attendees, and officials for their enthusiasm and support. Their collective efforts contribute to our mission of creating spaces where people of all ages can thrive. We look forward to future collaborations that continue to enrich our communities and support our vision of livable, engaging, and supportive environments for everyone.
