It is said that those who play together stay together. The same can be said for volunteerism. Meet AARP Pittsburgh Volunteers Mary and Michael Rosenberg of Scott Township, Pennsylvania, who will celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary this December.
In addition to being active in their community and having a shared interest in gardening, the Rosenbergs have found time to volunteer and advocate for AARP initiatives that impact adults 50 and older. Mary, a human resource specialist, began volunteering with AARP in 2019. Three years later, Michael, a retired Special Ed teacher, joined his wife in becoming an AARP volunteer.
Since then, the Rosenbergs have been volunteering side by side at numerous Community Engagement team programs in Pittsburgh, including events such as the University of Pittsburgh Latin American Festival, the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, the Washington Wild Things baseball games, and the Allegheny Land Trust education series. Both are passionate about AARP priority issues, including Social Security and voter engagement.
Both Mary and Michael are proud to be volunteers with AARP. They recognize the organization's important role in providing opportunities for 50+ adults to enhance their quality of life while having fun. They believe the organization's work helps to change the image of older adults and provides educational opportunities for lifelong learning.
Since their inception into AARP volunteerism, the Rosenbergs have also been instrumental in recruiting new volunteers for the Pittsburgh Engagement Team and have encouraged more than four of their friends to join. The Rosenbergs find that volunteering with AARP is a great way to leverage their talents and experiences in helping others.
They encourage individuals who want an opportunity to give back to their communities to join AARP as a volunteer, as it provides an opportunity to meet, work together and learn from varied backgrounds and experiences. Mary also adds that she loves volunteering for AARP because the organization treats their volunteers with dignity and respect.
