On the morning of June 12, 2016, Nancy Rosado received a distressed phone call from a friend, there was a massacre at a local LGBTQ club, now remembered as the Pulse tragedy. Nancy could have continued with her daily routine and gone to church. Instead she felt it was her duty, as a member of the Hispanic and LGBTQ community, to assist in anyway she could.

“At the hospital, I realized that most of the families and survivors present were speaking Spanish and that they were not completely understanding what the officials were saying,” said Nancy. “That wasn’t my moment to play clinician, so I spent the bulk of my day from that moment forward trying to get answers then translating for survivors and their families.”

While this is only part of Nancy’s story, it is an example of AARP’s commitment to creating a new vision of aging for LGBTQ+ individuals, their families, and allies. To further this commitment, a celebration of storytelling is happening on Dec. 8.

AARP Orlando and StoryCorps present “Listening OutLoud: A Celebration of LGBTQ voices.” It will feature voices of hope, resilience and love from Orlando and across the country that provide community connection and reflection at a time when we need it more than ever.
