Highlighting Portland

AARP Oregon highlights Veterans, Military and Their Families in November

Posted on 10/27/21 by Carmel Snyder

Oregon is home to more than 323,000 veterans, about 8,000 active duty military members plus families of the veterans and military. AARP Oregon is honoring their service with several events in November.

AARP founder, Ethel Percy Andrus had a passion for serving others, especially those whom society would tend to ignore. AARP continues to be inspired by her guiding principle, “To serve, not to be served.”

On November 4, in honor of Ethel’s commitment to service and National Veterans and Military Families Month, Create the Good(TM) and Wish of a Lifetime will be collaborating with VA Office of Development and Civic Engagement to host a LIVE event where like-minded volunteers will come together to paint rocks with inspirational messages that can be shared with veterans in their own communities! Register here.

Veterans' families will be highlighted in the "Their Families. Their Voices. Their Stories." at 10 a.m., Nov. 10. The event is a conversation with military families, from children to spouses, who will share their joys and challenges as military families. Register for the event here.

On Nov. 17, our Fall Concert Series continues with a salute to veterans as part of the Vital Aging 2021 conference. Featured musicians include Crys Matthews and Jim, and Nell.

The state events are planned in coordination with other AARP virtual events. Check these out or visit www.aarp.org/vcc for more veterans' month events.

AARP salutes the service and sacrifice of veterans, military personnel, and their families. In October, AARP launched a new tool to provide valuable information and resources to help veterans, military families, and caregivers navigate their healthcare options. The Veterans and Military Families Health Benefits Navigator provides Oregon's veterans with critical information about what is required to qualify for health care benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or Department of Defense (DoD).

"Now more than ever, veterans and military families need help accessing the health care benefits they earned serving our country," said Bandana Shrestha, AARP Oregon state director. "This free, one-stop resource will help make the process less confusing and overwhelming for veterans and military families as they navigate their options."
