AARP Opens New San Antonio Fitness Park
AARP Texas Director Tina Tran opened Texas’ first AARP-sponsored outdoor fitness park in Normoyle Park last week. The opening ceremony included remarks from Mayor Ron Nirenberg and San Antonio City Council Member Shirley Gonzales as well as demonstrations of the new equipment.
Over the next several years, AARP plans to sponsor a fitness park in every state. AARP is working with FitLot, a 501c3 organization dedicated to helping communities find the resources they need to plan, build and program outdoor fitness parks, to construct over a dozen parks in 2019. Each park will include FitLot exercise equipment that can be adapted to meet a wide range of fitness levels and abilities.
“AARP Texas has long been committed to working in local communities, focusing on helping make our cities and neighborhoods more livable for older Texans—and their families too,” says Lisa Rodriguez, who oversees AARP’s work locally. “Nowhere is this truer than in San Antonio, where our tireless volunteers and staff have long advocated for the things that matter most to our city’s residents.”
In 2019, fitness parks sponsored by AARP have opened in St. Petersburg, FL; Manchester, NH; Newport, RI; Bangor, ME; Buffalo, NY; Cincinnati, OH; Rapid City, SD; Springfield, IL; Wilmington, DE; Jackson, MS; Hagerstown, MD; New Orleans, LA; Mobile, AL; and Phoenix, AZ.
