Over the past few months, AARP New Jersey has held multiple healthy, active living classes to get you up and active while remaining in the comfort of your home!
Participants from across the state connected virtually for our series of free, virtual workout classes – including tai chi, gentle chair yoga and Vinyasa Flow beginner/intermediate yoga.
This summer, we also held our first virtual “Planting & Pallet” party. We were joined by Bruce Crawford, State Program Leader in Home & Public Horticulture for Rutgers Cooperative Extension, who shared tips on gardening at home and how to prepare for a fall harvest. Participants learned how to make an easy, low-cost, planter box from reclaimed pallets – perfect for small spaces like a home balcony, patio, or pop-up community garden!
Then, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), we hosted a virtual Zumba Gold dance class. The low-impact, modified, easy-to-follow version of the wildly popular, Latin-inspired Zumba Dance fitness workout was a hit. We followed up with a virtual Latin dance class, which highlighted Salsa, Merengue, Bachata & Cumbia dances.
We also held virtual, healthy cooking classes to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Chef Carolina Moratti provided flavorful and culturally infused recipes and walked participants through the preparation as she cooked the meal live from her kitchen! Chef Moratti taught a Mexican recipe in the morning class in English, and followed up with a Spanish recipe in the evening class in Spanish.
