AARP New Jersey Applauds Assembly Health Committee for Passing Bill to Improve Financial Transparency and Accountability in Nursing Homes

Statement from AARP New Jersey Associate State Director of Advocacy Katie York

TRENTON, NJ (Jan. 12, 2023) – “AARP New Jersey applauds the NJ Assembly Health Committee for passing legislation (A4484) today that will provide safer, higher quality of care for nursing home residents by improving the financial reporting requirements that owners must disclose.

“AARP is working to create a long-term care system that will provide higher quality of care and quality of life in all settings. Nearly three out of every four nursing homes in New Jersey are for-profit facilities. Some nursing homes have complex structures that make it difficult to see where cash is flowing and may allow money to be siphoned away from resident care.

“This legislation creates more robust reporting, including consolidated financial reports, that will tell us where the money is going and help consumers make more informed decisions when choosing a facility.

“When it comes to financial transparency, this bill is currently one of the most expansive and comprehensive pieces of legislation that holds nursing home owners accountable. This financial disclosure includes all parties with ownership control or lease, financial, or operational interest in the facility.

“We must ensure any funding provided to nursing homes goes toward the health and safety of residents. We now urge the NJ Legislature to pass A4484 and get this bill to the Governor’s desk so we can keep all those with financial interest in nursing homes accountable."
