Montana Homestead Exemption Now Open for Applications
Great news for Montana homeowners and long-term rental property owners: Starting December 1, 2025, you can apply for the new Homestead Exemption, which will lower your property tax rate beginning in 2026.
Key points:
- If you received the 2024 Montana property tax rebate on your primary residence, you’ve likely been automatically enrolled — no action needed unless you’ve sold the home or changed your primary address. The Department of Revenue (DOR) has mailed confirmation letters to those individuals.
- Approximately 220,000–225,000 primary residences are already enrolled automatically.
- If you didn’t get the rebate or want to double-check your status, visit the DOR website to confirm enrollment.
- Owners of long-term rental properties must apply manually (DOR expects 50,000–60,000 applications covering ~115,000 units).
- Deadline to apply for the 2026 tax year: March 1, 2026.
