As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the lives of Michiganders, AARP will do our part to prevent the spread of this virus and continue to host quality programming and a variety of in-person and virtual events in 2022. We closely monitor for COVID-19 developments and are taking the precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local public health agencies.

AARP Sponsors Detroit Riverwalkers.
Detroit Riverwalkers is a walking program presented by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and sponsored by AARP. Older Adults, 50+, are invited to participate in this FREE program that encourages wellness through walking on the Detroit Riverwalk and fitness classes.
The program begins June 7 and is held weekly every Tuesday & Thursday through August 25.
Every Tuesday 8 AM - 10 AM will feature:

  • Health education
  • Fitness classes
  • Opportunities to speak with health experts
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Best kept AARP secrets
  • Surprises throughout the program
  • Walk the riverwalk at your own leisure

Every Thursday 8 AM - 10 AM will feature:

  • Fitness class at 9 AM

Thursday, August 11 - Doctors Living with Dementia: A View from Both Sides of the Desk.

Tuesday, August 16 - AARP Night at the Whitecaps.
Join AARP Michigan for a night at LMCU Ballpark. Get to know AARP staff, volunteers and other members as we cheer on the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday, August 16. Discounted tickets can be purchased by AARP members and their guests at $14 each for box seats and $12.50 each for bleacher seats. Brats can be purchased for $2.

Thursday, August 18 - Caring for the Caregiver... Don't Let Your Stress Manage You!
Caring for someone with Dementia can be challenging. This workshop focuses on helping people recognize the stress process and learn to interrupt it early in the cycle, before it escalates. Many individual stress management techniques are discussed, as well as a specific model for understanding the effects of stress on our emotions, our brains and our bodies. This presentation also includes tips for interacting with loved ones with dementia as well as information on caregiver stress and burnout.

Tuesday, August 30 - How LGBTQ+ Individuals Can Protect Themselves and Their Loved Ones.
As we age, confronting the truth about our own mortality can be frightening. Our final wishes are a way of making sure our passing is handled with respect and dignity. But if they are not legally documented, your family is not obligated to carry them out. Our friends at the AARP North Carolina office are here to help us prepare.

In this session, Mike Casterlow, Esq., of The Elderlaw Firm in Greensboro, N.C, will discuss the potential impact of the recent SCOTUS decision on Marriage Equality, and how couples can protect themselves against the possibility that their legal rights could change. To make sure that your wishes are carried out and that your loved ones are protected, you MUST make sure your legal documents are in order. While he practices law in North Carolina, the information and advice that he will cover will be helpful no matter where you live.
