AARP Michigan End of Session Report shows wins, challenges

Posted on 01/08/19

AARP Michigan posted several substantial victories on its legislative agenda during the recently concluded 2017-18 session of the Michigan Legislature.

But the record also shows that much work remains to be done.

At the close of each two-year state legislative session, AARP Michigan publishes an End of Session Report that summarizes organization-supported bills that won passage.

The document also provides a rundown on the status of  bills backed by AARP that did not pass during the session.

The report shows legislation was enacted that will:

  • Facilitate in-person health care and the growing use of telehealth technology.
  • Make it easier for older adults in Michigan to live safely and independently in their own homes and communities as they age.
  • Expand access to dental care.
  • Improve safety for bicyclists in the state.

Bills not enacted that AARP will urge legislators to continue working on in 2019 would:

  • Provide a tax credit for home accessibility.
  • Expand access to broadband high-speed internet.
  • Make prescription drug pricing more transparent.
  • Eliminate the mandatory judicial retirement age.
  • Repeal or modify the 7-year-old pension tax.
