Recently, we sat down with longtime AARP Massachusetts volunteer Gene Moulton and asked him what he likes best about volunteering. He started with AARP about four years ago, and by now, you have probably seen Gene at a shred event, or spoken to him at one of our community outreach events across the state. Gene is also active as an advocate and has met with his legislators to further AARP's priorities.
Gene, at 83 years young, lives in Wakefield and keeps very busy volunteering for many organizations. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the Wakefield Historical Society, serves on the Board of Wakefield Historical Commission, and volunteers at the Wakefield food pantry. Gene also volunteers at Mystic Valley Elder Services and assists a woman with balancing her checkbook every month. Gene, who worked in the education field for his career, also is a substitute English language teacher for the Immigrant Learning Center in Malden, where he recently received an award commemorating his 15 years of service. He also conducts walking tours of the North End for Boston by Foot.
Aside from volunteering, Gene is a world traveler. He worked as a tour guide after he retired and has visited 23 countries and all seven continents. Next year, he plans to travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia. Future plans may take him to Rio de Janeiro and the Canadian Rockies. An avid photographer, he has amassed a collection of photos from his travels to Egypt, Peru, New Zealand, Austria, and Antarctica, to name a few. Gene grew up on a farm in Maine, so he prefers traveling to cooler climates rather than tropical.
If you attend the Downton Abbey: The Exhibition event in September, chances are you’ll see Gene at the AARP table and he’ll tell you all about what AARP has to offer. During tax season, Gene volunteers for the AARP Foundation Tax Aide Program as a greeter and makes sure everyone has their paperwork in order before they meet with a tax aide consultant.
Gene has an outgoing, friendly personality and loves to get to know people. It’s no surprise that tabling events are his favorite volunteer opportunity at AARP Massachusetts. If you see Gene around the state, please tell him hello!
If you would like to volunteer for AARP Massachusetts, we'd love to have you! Please email Kelli Lefler at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
