AARP Massachusetts Applauds Safety Recommendations for Assisted Living Residents
AARP Massachusetts is praising the Massachusetts Assisted Living Residences Commission for unanimously submitting its final report to Governor Maura Healey. These assisted living safety recommendations aim to strengthen health and safety standards for older adults living in assisted living facilities across the Commonwealth. Read the Commission's Report here.
The commission, created under the 2024 long-term care reform law, was tasked with proposing policies to ensure assisted living residences meet residents’ health and safety needs. Originally due in August 2025, the report was delayed after the tragic July fire at Gabriel House in Fall River that killed 10 residents. That incident prompted members to seek additional input from safety experts before finalizing recommendations.
“AARP Massachusetts applauds the commission’s unanimous action to prioritize safety,” said Jen Benson, AARP Massachusetts State Director and commission member. “This work will make a real difference for residents and families across the Commonwealth. Older adults deserve peace of mind knowing that the places they call home are prepared for emergencies and prioritize their well-being.”
The recommendations submitted to Governor Healey are expected to guide future legislative and regulatory efforts to improve fire safety, emergency preparedness, and transparency for families making care decisions. They also address critical issues such as staffing levels and affordability, ensuring quality care remains accessible and sustainable for Massachusetts seniors.
