AARP Maine Stands Ready to Discuss Issues with Candidates, Engages Mainers 50-Plus in 2018 Elections
Social Security, Medicare, Rx Drug Prices, Housing Among Top Priorities for Maine’s Most Active Voting Demographic
PORTLAND: In the weeks leading up to the June 12th Primary Election, AARP Maine staff and volunteers engaged older Mainers in voter engagement initiatives across the state. Through local events and non-partisan community conversations, Mainers 50-plus and their families have been encouraged to not only vote in the Primary, but to pledge to do so on November 6th as well. Through AARP’s Be The Difference. Vote. campaign, 50+ voters are declaring their intention to hear the candidates’ positions on select issues before making their voices heard at the polls.
“Now that we have the full results of Maine’s, and the Nation’s, first Ranked Choice Voting Primary Election, AARP Maine looks forward to speaking with the candidates at both the state and federal levels about the issues of greatest concern to older residents,” AARP Maine State Director, Lori Parham, stated today. “Medicare, Social Security, affordable housing, prescription drug costs, caregiving and other critical issues are all on the line. Through Be The Difference. Vote., Mainers 50-plus are sending a strong message to candidates and politicians that they will be held accountable to their positions on these important issues.”
Over the next few weeks, AARP Maine will be sharing their 2018 State Platform with state and federal general election candidates, community leaders and their 230,000 Maine members.
“Especially in our most rural communities, older Maine residents are anxious about making ends meet, having access to affordable housing in retirement, and being able to pay for their prescriptions. Many are also concerned about the long-term stability of Social Security and Medicare,” said Parham. “Mainers 50-plus represent the most active voting demographic in the state, and this year’s elections will determine Maine’s direction for years to come.”
As part of the Be The Difference. Vote. campaign, AARP Maine will track key races including the U.S. Senate race, the Second Congressional District House race and the Governor’s race. AARP Maine will also host community conversations on key issues, and host candidate forums and tele-town hall events. All of these activities will be posted on AARP Maine’s website and on social media as details become available.
In the last mid-term election, Mainers 50 and older voted at higher percentages than the national average. According to the US Census Bureau, 68 percent of Maine registered voters age 50-59 voted in November of 2014 compared to the national average of 49 percent for that same age group. In Maine, the number rose to 79 percent for voters age 60-69 and 71 percent for voters age 70 and older compared to the national average of 59 percent across both age groups.
At the national level, AARP is partnering with Politico Magazine to demonstrate through polling, news articles and events how important the 50-plus voter will be in deciding the results of this year’s congressional midterm elections as well as state races across the country. As part of this collaboration, Politico is producing a series called The Deciders, which debuted on June 18th.
