AARP Lehigh Valley Veteran Caregiver Appreciation Breakfast
The leadership of Lehigh and Northampton counties partnered with AARP Lehigh Valley and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to take the steps necessary to be declared Hidden Heroes counties this year. Hidden Heroes counties are dedicated to streamlining services to military caregivers and sharing best practices.
To mark the occasion and National Veterans and Military Families Month, those organizations joined in showing their support during the Veteran Caregiver Appreciation breakfast at DeSales University on November 6, recognizing veteran caregivers in the Lehigh Valley.
On hand for the breakfast were Kellie VonStein from AARP Lehigh Valley; Lamont McClure, Northampton County Executive; Phillips Armstrong, Lehigh County Executive; Rochelle McDonough, MSW, LCSW, Veterans Administration – Caregiver Support Program; and Lauren Bauer, BSW, Lead Case Manager, Lehigh County Area Agency on Aging – Caregiver Support Program.
April Mulvey, Pennsylvania Dole Caregiver Fellow of 2021 spoke on her personal story of caring for her husband Billy, a Marine veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
As the largest veterans' support organization in the marketplace, AARP works to empower veterans and their families who dedicate their lives to their loved ones by providing complex care at home, navigating the care system, paying for care needs, and advocating for veterans. AARP provides veteran and caregiver emotional support programs, veterans' health care programs, and family caregivers assistance.
