AARP Las Cruces Chapter/Community Events 

 March and April 

The AARP Las Cruces Chapter is always up to something in the community. Check-out these upcoming events, which are open to the public and in most cases free.

March 20 – AARP Las Cruces Chapter Meeting: presentation by Kevin Bixby, executive director, of the Southwest Environmental Center, speaking on the Center’s conservation efforts in support of their mission to protect and restore native wildlife and their habitats in the region. The Chapter is also collecting donations for the Care Net Pregnancy Center. Please bring diapers, size 1-6; wipes, blankets toiletries and baby clothing, sizes 0 to 12 months.  The Chapter meets at Peace Lutheran Church, at the corner of Missouri and Locust, at 2 p.m.

March 23 – Rodey and Sparky’s Field Trip: Join the Chapter for a tour of the St. Frances de Sales Church in Rodey, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with lunch at Sparky’s, where you can enjoy burgers and music, to follow. Meet at the Munson Center Parking lot, 975 S Mesquite St, Las Cruces, located across the street from the center at 9:45 a.m. Ridesharing is available.

March 27 — Movies for Grownups Presents Instant Family: Join AARP for a night at the movies. Instant Family is a heartwarming comedy the whole family can enjoy, rated PG-13. Admission is free. The movie begins at 7 p.m. at the Cineport 10 in La Mesilla Valley Mall. Registration is required and seating is on a first come, first served basis. April 11 – Fraud Prevention, AARP Fraud Watch: AARP Volunteer and Chapter Board Member Patrick Gillespie, will show participants how to prevent becoming a victim of fraud and scams. He will share tips on how to protect yourself from becoming a victim by knowing what to watch for. The presentation is from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Senior Amigos, 3948, East Lohman. Attendance is free and is open to the public.

April 13/ Ongoing each Second Saturday of the Month – Adopt-A-Spot: The AARP Chapter has joined the Las Cruces cleanup and beautification program with volunteers picking up litter and helping create a clean and beautiful environment. Volunteers meet at 9:30 a.m. at Big O Tires on Sonoma Ranch and then head to the area of Bataan East and Rinconada Blvd. Safety vests and trash bags will be provided. Everyone is welcome.

 April 16 – Five Pillars of Brain Health: Presented by Louise Tracey-Hosa, local AARP Chapter Vice President. Learn about the five pillars of a healthy-brain lifestyle and practical brain-boosting behaviors. It’s never too late to take charge of your brain health. The presentation is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Good Samaritan, 3025 Terrace Drive

April 27 – We Need to Talk:  Judy Cota, local AARP Chapter board member, will facilitate a discussion on how families and friends can approach having a conversation with older drivers. Learn how to have a sensitive and successful conversation with a family member or friend when you are concerned about that person’s driving safety.  The free discussion is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Good Samaritan, 3025 Terrace Drive.

Ongoing Projects:

AARP Tax Aide, now in its 50th year, offers free in-person tax preparation and assistance at the Community Action Agency, 3880 Foothills Rd. Suite A. Volunteer tax preparers will be available until April 12, Monday thru Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Evening hours are available until April 10, Monday and Wednesday only.  Please arrive no later than 5 p.m. as preparers only work until 7 p.m. For more information call (575) 527-8799.

Community Outreach: AARP Information Table at Farmer’s Market, seven city block along Main Street, in downtown Las Cruces, every first Saturday of the month.  An information table will also be at Senior Circle, 3948 E. Lohman Ave., on May 8, 10a.m. to noon.

Hermosa Heights Elementary School project — We help 15 special education students with project every second Tuesday of the month from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

AARP Driver Safety Courses

Driver Safety Courses: Get a discount on your Vehicle Insurance by taking a class and improve your abilities out on the road! It’s $15 AARP Members, $20 for nonmembers. For more information, call Dave at 317-385-8874 or email at dlynchio@hotmail.com

 Good Samaritan, April 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Please call (575) 430-0932 for reservations.  Harold O’Dell is the instructor. The Good Samaritan is located at 3025 Terrace Drive.
