AARP Kansas Volunteers Advocate for You at the Kansas Capitol

Posted on 01/20/26

AARP Kansas hosted its annual Advocacy Day—affectionately known as Cookie Day—at the Kansas Statehouse. This event brings volunteers together to meet with legislators, share cookies, and most importantly, discuss issues that matter to Kansans age 50 and older.

Why It Matters

The 2026 Kansas legislative session, which began January 12, is packed with decisions that will impact financial security, caregiving, and consumer protection. Lobby Day is our chance to make sure lawmakers hear directly from constituents about these priorities.

Top Legislative Priorities

  1. Work & Save Program
Nearly 443,000 Kansas private-sector workers lack access to a workplace retirement savings plan. AARP Kansas supports creating an auto-IRA retirement savings option to help workers—especially those in small businesses—prepare for a secure future.
  2. Family Caregiver Tax Credit
Kansas has more than 340,000 family caregivers providing millions of hours of unpaid care. AARP Kansas advocates for a tax credit to ease the financial strain on caregivers who help loved ones remain at home.
  3. Consumer Protection Against Fraud
Cryptocurrency kiosks and other emerging technologies pose risks for older adults. AARP Kansas backs legislation to strengthen safeguards against financial scams and fraud.

Together, we can make Kansas a better place to live and age. Thank you for standing with us!
