AARP Kansas City Remodels Norton Ave. Home
Over the past year, AARP Kansas City partnered with the Westside Housing Organization and Emerging Builders to combat the affordable housing issue in the city and remodel a home in the Lykins neighborhood.
After surveying members in 2019, AARP found that Kansas City residents were facing a plethora of livability issues such as pedestrian safety, transportation, and affordable housing that negatively affected their ability to age in place.
As a result of this survey, AARP Kansas City and Westside Housing Organization and Emerging Builders, a local nonprofit that rehabs and sells properties to low-income families at below-market value, decided to renovate a years-vacant home on Norton Avenue and transform it into a location perfect for aging in place.
In addition to its four bedrooms and two and a half baths, this home has a fully ADA accessible ground floor. Outside of the home, there is off-street parking, a built-in wheelchair ramp, and a front and back deck. Other features include a kitchen, living room, and dining room on the main floor along with laundry, a front yard, and a sizable backyard.
The home was completed in October 2020, and a happy family was able to move in right before the Thanksgiving holiday. We hope they love their new house!
