AARP in San Jose is here locally to help you take on 2022 with virtual and in-person events, local resources, vaccine information and more.

LOCAL VIRTUAL EVENTS: 
Explore Tech Lecture with Senior Planet from AARP – Google Maps: September 7th
Join Senior Planet from AARP for an introduction to the platform Google Maps. Google Maps is a mapping application that offers satellite imagery, street maps, and street-view perspectives. It also has a route planner for your preferred transportation method, be it foot, car, bicycle or public transportation. Learn more and register HERE. This in-person event is FREE and open to the public. Registration is required and space is limited.

The 12th Annual Caregivers Count Conference: September 10th, 17th, 25th and October 1st
Join us and Age-Friendly Silicon Valley for a four-part series focused on family and informal caregiving for older adults. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from informative speakers as well as senior service agencies to learn about supportive services in Santa Clara County. This year’s conference format will be streamed live via Zoom. In addition, for the opening session on September 10, there will be an optional in-person "watch party". Learn more and register HERE. Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council Health Fair: September 10th
Joins us for the Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council’s health fair, hosted in partnership with Counseling and Support Services for Youth. The health fair intends to raise awareness around the parallels in mental health experienced across generations, de-stigmatize mental health, and create opportunities for healing after one of the most challenging periods in history. Through workshops, on-site counseling, resource tables, and Age-Friendly activities, this event will offer a space where people can gain tools to support their mental health, feel seen and heard, have fun, and leave feeling renewed and hopeful for the future. Explore Tech Lecture with Senior Planet from AARP – Messaging Apps: September 14th
Join Senior Planet from AARP to learn about sending texts and pictures, making voice and video calls, and how you can keep your messages secure. The lecture will go over the features of three widely used apps: iMessages, Hangouts, and WhatsApp. Learn more and register HERE. This in-person event is FREE and open to the public. San Jose Spotlight Presents Mayoral Candidate Forum: September 15th
Join us for San Jose Spotlight’s Mayoral Candidate Forum. Hear from the City of San Jose’s two mayoral candidates and learn where they stand on housing, transportation, public safety, as well as their plans for the nation’s 10th largest city. Learn more and register HERE. This event will be held in-person and streamed virtually. The event is FREE and open to the public.

AARP has a proud, 36-year history of non-partisan voter engagement. We do not endorse candidates or make candidate/campaign contributions; we do, however, inform AARP members and the public on where candidates stand on issues of importance to 50+ Americans.

15th Annual Luna Park Chalk Art Festival: September 17th
Join us for Luna Park Art’s annual chalk art festival! Celebrating its 15th year, the Luna Park Chalk Art Festival attracts over 3,000 artists, students, vendors, and community members for a colorful day in San Jose's Backesto Park. Artists, students and chalk enthusiasts create over 250 pieces of diverse art throughout the park’s pathways, including original works, classical re­creations, traditional Italian madonarri street painting, 3D realistic works, cartoons, modern abstractions, and more. In addition to the artwork, the festival features a main stage of local musicians, dancers and performers, as well as local food trucks and vendor booths. Senior Safari – Enjoy a Day at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo: September 22nd
Join AARP California for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo’s Senior Safari series and enjoy a day at the zoo. This program is designed to help older adults improve their health, avoid social isolation and enjoy a unique environment that stimulates both mind and body. Senior Safari admission and parking are free for those ages 50-plus that arrive before 10 a.m. PT (the park opens to seniors at 9 a.m. PT), and guests are welcome to stay for the day after gates open to the general public. COMMUNITY MEETINGS:
City of San Jose Vision Zero Community Engagement Meetings: September 8th and 21st
Help make the City of San Jose a safer place to move around! This summer, the City of San Jose is gathering input from neighbors who live, work, and go to school in various areas of the city of how to improve street and sidewalk safety. Join a virtual workshop to share your feedback and thoughts. Learn more and register HERE.

As a trusted voice and fierce defender, AARP has been devoted to providing information and resources about all aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the vaccines.  AARP is providing information and resources to protect those ages 50+ and their families from the coronavirus and help prevent it from spreading to others. Fraud and Scam Prevention 
Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork  or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or get help if you’ve fallen victim. The aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork also offers news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving 
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, steps for caregivers worried about the crisis, legal tips for caregivers during COVID-19, and much more. Individuals taking care of a loved one can also call the AARP Caregiver Support Line at 877-333-5885.
