AARP in San Jose is here locally to help you take on 2022 with virtual and in-person events, local resources, vaccine information and more.

LOCAL VIRTUAL EVENTS: 
The 12th Annual Caregivers Count Conference: September 10th, 17th, 25th and October 1st
Join us and Age-Friendly Silicon Valley for the final session of a four-part series focused on family and informal caregiving for older adults. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from informative speakers as well as senior service agencies to learn about supportive services in Santa Clara County. Learn more and register HERE. Day on the Bay: October 8th
Join us for Day on the Bay hosted by San Jose’s District 3 office and the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department. Enjoy a fun-filled festival along the beautiful South Bay shores of Alviso. Explore Tech Lecture with Senior Planet from AARP – Mindfulness Applications: October 12th 
Join Senior Planet from AARP for an introduction to mindfulness applications. Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present and aware. You can practice mindfulness through simple activities. This lecture introduces mindfulness and its physical and mental benefits, such as reducing anxiety, improving memory, and lowering blood pressure. You’ll learn about popular apps that teach breathing and meditation techniques, as well as new technology like wearable breath monitors and smart yoga mats. Learn more and register HERE. Explore Tech Lecture with Senior Planet from AARP – Mobile Health Applications: October 19th 
Join Senior Planet from AARP for an introduction to mobile health applications. Did you know that your smartphone is also a powerful health tool? This lecture introduces common health apps, like the iPhone's built-in app and the Google Fit app. You'll learn about using the app's step counter, as well as integrating information from other popular health and fitness apps. Workshop – Senior Inspector Collom Shares How to Protect Yourself from Frauds and Scams: October 20th
Join us and attendees from across the U.S. for a workshop with Senior Inspector Jason Collom on fraud prevention. During this event you will learn about the mindset of an online fraudster or scam artist, how to spot a fraud or scam and what to do in response, and what to do if you are a loved one becomes a victim to fraud or a scam. Senior Safari – Enjoy a Day at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo: October 27th 
Join AARP California for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo’s Senior Safari for a day at the zoo. This is the last day of the year for Senior Safari, a program designed to help older adults improve their health, avoid social isolation and enjoy a unique environment that stimulates both mind and body. Senior Safari admission and parking are free for those ages 50-plus that arrive before 10 a.m. PT (the park opens to seniors at 9 a.m. PT), and guests are welcome to stay for the day after gates open to the general public. Silicon Valley Asian Pacific FilmFest: October 28th – November 6th
The Silicon Valley Asian Pacific FilmFest is a celebration of the multi-ethnic community and rich history of Silicon Valley. The film festival showcases independent films primarily by Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) filmmakers and offers quality programming, giving the community a chance to interact with the creative talents behind these films. Avenidas de Altares: October 29th – October 30th
Join us at Avenida de Altares, San Jose’s long-standing Día de los Muertos celebration hosted by The School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza. The spectacular will showcase the vibrancy of Mexican heritage through the collection of cultural festivities, dances, and musical performances that honor the living and the dead. Fraud and Scam Prevention 
Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork  or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or get help if you’ve fallen victim. The aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork also offers news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving 
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, steps for caregivers worried about the crisis, legal tips for caregivers during COVID-19, and much more.
