AARP in San Jose is here to help you take on May with Coronavirus (COVID-19) support, local resources, information, services and more.

LOCAL EVENTS:

To protect AARP members, staff and volunteers, AARP is following the guidance of the CDC and has temporarily suspended AARP in-person events. When the time is right, AARP will look forward to rescheduling these popular programs and events. Meanwhile, join us virtually!

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Join AARP California as we take a stand against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate crimes and celebrate AAPI cultures and contributions to our community with online events. Learn more HERE.

Silicon Valley Affordable Housing Month
With shelter-in-place now extended through May, Silicon Valley at Home is taking Affordable Housing Month (AHM) virtual! Full of virtual events, activities for all ages, and invigorating conversations, AHM 2020 brings our community together to learn, engage, and act on how we can work to make Silicon Valley a more affordable place to live for all residents. AARP ON COVID-19:

In the face of the health crisis, AARP continues to provide information and resources to help older adults and those caring for them protect themselves from COVID-19 and prevent it from spreading to others. AARP has information and resources on the Coronavirus at aarp.org/coronavirus and in Spanish at aarp.org/elcoronavirus. On these websites you can find free resources on caregiving, health, financial security and more. AARP also partnered with Governor Newsom and the California Department of Aging to create a California for ALL resources, a one-stop information guide on COVID-10 for ALL Californians – but especially older adults. Fraud and Scam Prevention
AARP’s Fraud Watch Network works to stop fraud and scams and protect individuals, especially as criminals leverage pandemic fears to take advantage of victims. If someone suspects a scam, they should call the toll-free AARP Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360 to report it. Individuals can also visit aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork for news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, steps for caregivers worried about the crisis, legal tips for caregivers during COVID-19, and much more. Individuals taking care of a loved one can also call the AARP Caregiver Support Line at 877-333-5885.

Online Learning
AARP offers free online, video and podcast learning opportunities that can be found at learn.aarp.org. Topics include how to job network in the digital age, use app-based ridesharing, how to organize and declutter your home and more.

LOCAL MEETINGS:

City of San Jose 2020-2021 Community Budget Meeting
Throughout May the City of San Jose is hosting Community Budget Meetings. The City’s community budget meetings are an opportunity for the city to share information on the budget process and gather valuable input from the community. Due to the County’s existing shelter-in-place orders, the Mayor will be holding community budget meetings virtually, with a telephone call-in option. Tentative dates and times for community budget meetings are:

  • Wednesday, May 13 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Monday, May 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
