AARP in San Jose is here locally to help you take on 2023 with virtual and in-person events, local resources, information and more.

LOCAL VIRTUAL EVENTS: 

Veterans Card Writing Event (May 4)
In honor of Memorial Day, join us as we write cards thanking veterans for their sacrifice and service. This volunteer activity is a hybrid event that will be offered in-person and virtually. 

You can either join us 1) in-person in our AARP San Jose Office from 10 a.m. – Noon PT or 2) participate virtually via Zoom from 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. PT. All cards will then be delivered to local veteran serving agencies prior to Memorial Day. Learn more and register HERE. This hybrid event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Congressman Mullin’s Senior Fraud Prevention Seminar (May 5)
Join us as Congressmember Kevin Mullin hosts his first in a series of free Fraud Prevention Seminars. Learn about common frauds and scams that target older adults, and tips to avoid falling victim. Morgan Hill Community Resource Fair (May 6)
Join us as the Morgan Hill Senior Advisory Committee presents their 2023 Health and Wellness Resource Fair! Learn about locally offered older adult resources and health services while enjoying live performances, health screenings, food and more. Learn more HERE. Dealing with Dad Audience Q&A: A Fun & Informative Film Discussion (May 9)
Join us for a fun and informative discussion with the director, producer, and actors of the moving comedy-drama Dealing with Dad. Dealing With Dad, a movie by award winning filmmaker Tom Huang, follows adult children returning home to cope with their father’s debilitating depression only to discover he’s a more pleasant person depressed. During this discussion, attendees will hear from Tom Huang, actor Dana Lee, who plays Dad, and the Contemporary Asian Theater Scene about both the movie and the AAPI experience in the film industry. You can watch the movie in advance of the discussion by ordering a free ticket (click the “Order Ticket” button). This will give you access to view the film remotely from May 5-9.

The Japanese American Museum of San Jose: An Educational Chat on the Museum and the Contributions of Japanese Americans (May 10)
Join us for a conversation with Michael Sera, board president of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose. He’ll examine the history of Japanese Americans’ experience in this country and challenges they faced while adapting and contributing to life in their West Coast communities. Attendees will also learn how the museum has created a unique space for sharing the Japanese American experience and about its offerings.  Learn more and register HERE. San Jose Town Hall: Meet Mayor Mahan and Learn About the 2023 City Budget (May 20)
Join us for a special townhall with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan as we discuss the Fiscal Year 2023 city budget. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Mayor Mahan on his proposed budget, ask questions on the issues important to older residents, and get the answers they need. Soul Stroll for Health (May 20)
Join AARP California for Soul Stroll for Health, the Bay Area Community Health Advisory Council’s signature, annual event. Soul Stroll is a fun, family friendly event encouraging community members to safely engage in physical activities including, walking, running, and biking 1, 3 or 5 miles. The event also features a resource marketplace with local non-profit organizations, business, and government groups who will share health and wellness resources – make sure to stop by AARP’s table at the event! Your ticket gives you access to the main event, a light breakfast, professionally led warm-up sessions, a healthy lunch, access to the marketplace resource booths and the coveted Soul Stoll t-shirt. Senior Safari: Enjoy a Day at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (May 25)
Join AARP California for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo’s Senior Safari series and enjoy a day at the zoo. This program is designed to help older adults improve their health, avoid social isolation, and enjoy a unique environment that stimulates both mind and body. Senior Safari admission and parking are free for those ages 50-plus that arrive before 10 a.m. PT (the park opens to seniors at 9 a.m. PT), and guests are welcome to stay for the day after gates open to the public. Silicon Valley Affordable Housing Month: A Month-Long Series on Housing (May)
Join non-profit Silicon Valley at Home as they present Silicon Valley Affordable Housing Month, which boasts an array of educational virtual and in-person offerings focused on the issues of housing and homelessness. Learn more HERE.

Fraud and Scam Prevention 
Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork  or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or get help if you’ve fallen victim. The Fraud Watch Network also offers news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving 
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, caregiver checklists, legal tips for caregivers, and much more. Individuals taking care of a loved one can also call the AARP Caregiver Support Line at 877-333-5885.
