AARP in San Jose is here to help you take on June with Coronavirus (COVID-19) support, local resources, information, services and more.

LOCAL EVENTS:
To protect AARP members, staff and volunteers, AARP is following the guidance of the CDC and has temporarily suspended AARP in-person events. When the time is right, AARP will look forward to rescheduling these popular programs and events. Meanwhile, join us virtually!

Zoom Trainings: June 3 & June 9, 2020
Join AARP, in collaboration with Senior Planet, on Wednesday, June 3 or Tuesday, June 9 for ALL THINGS ZOOM virtual trainings! Caregiving While Black: June 12, 2020
On Friday, June 12, 2020 from noon to 1 p.m. PT the Alzheimer’s Association will host a special virtual forum, Caregiving While Black: The Cultural Implications of Caregiving. The virtual and telephone panel discussion will focus on the impact of race and culture on caregiver’s mental health, medical, spiritual and safety needs. AARP’s Response to the Housing Crisis in Light of Covid-19: June 16, 2020
On Tuesday, June 16, 2020 from 11 a.m. to noon PT AARP and Silicon Valley at Home will host a virtual presentation on AARP’s Response to the Housing Crisis in Light of Covid-19: A National, State, and Local Perspective. During the virtual presentation AARP’s Fred Buzo and Rafi Nazarians will go over AARP housing resources and updates, discuss the impact COVID-19 is having on the housing crisis and more. International Alzheimer’s Symposium: June 20, 2020
On Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 9 a.m. to noon PT, The Alzheimer’s Association, in collaboration with University of California San Francisco (UCSF), Global Brain Health Institute and Well Connected Español, will host the first International Alzheimer’s Symposium in Spanish via Zoom and Facebook. Neurologists and Geriatric specialists will present virtually on issues about Alzheimer’s disease including latest advances in research, clinical studies and how to care for the caregiver. Movies for Grownups: On-Going

Live From Home: On-Going
Live From Home is a series of 45-minute live-streamed concerts presented by San Jose Jazz in response to the quarantines sweeping the world due to the COVID-19 crisis. Watch live streams on Mondays and Thursdays featuring special artists like Mason Razavi, Mike Blankenship, Javier Satiago with Giulio Xavier, J. Hoard and Tracy Cruz. COVID-19 cancellations have devastated independent musicians and while this series is free, artists will be accepting donations. Learn more HERE. Please note, this is not an AARP event. AARP ON COVID-19:
In the face of the health crisis, AARP continues to provide information and resources to help older adults and those caring for them protect themselves from COVID-19 and prevent it from spreading to others. AARP has information and resources on the Coronavirus at aarp.org/coronavirus and in Spanish at aarp.org/elcoronavirus. On these websites you can find free resources on caregiving, health, financial security and more. AARP also partnered with Governor Newsom and the California Department of Aging to create a California for ALL Resource card, a one-stop information guide on COVID-19 for ALL Californians – but especially older adults. Fraud and Scam Prevention
AARP’s Fraud Watch Network works to stop fraud and scams and protect individuals, especially as criminals leverage pandemic fears to take advantage of victims. If someone suspects a scam, they should call the toll-free AARP Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360 to report it. Individuals can also visit aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork for news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, steps for caregivers worried about the crisis, legal tips for caregivers during COVID-19, and much more. Individuals taking care of a loved one can also call the AARP Caregiver Support Line at 877-333-5885.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide has launched a new website to give taxpayers access to tax preparation software, so qualifying individuals can prepare and file tax returns at no cost. Lear more and access the platform HERE.
