AARP in San Jose is here locally to help you take on 2022 with virtual events, local resources, vaccine information and more.

LOCAL VIRTUAL EVENTS: 
Tea & Coffee Tuesdays - Emergency Readiness: July 12th
If a natural disaster strikes, are you prepared? Join us for Tea & Coffee Tuesdays with the American Red Cross to learn how to prepare for an emergency. Learn about to-go bags, how to get the latest safety news, what to expect if find yourself at an emergency shelter and more. Learn more and register HERE. This virtual event is FREE and open to the public. Registration is required.

Downsize and Declutter with Kris & Diane– Virtual Community Education Workshop: July 22nd
Do you need help decluttering your home? Or are you planning to downsize and not sure what to keep or let go? Join us for a fun interactive presentation as we explore why stuff is so important for some people and learn practical, easy-to-follow tips on downsizing and decluttering. Fiesta Del Mariachi – Hosted by School of Arts and Culture at MHP: July 22nd & 23rd  
Join us as the School of Arts and Culture at MHP host their inaugural Fiesta del Mariachi. This two-day event aims to share the art of mariachi customs and traditions through music workshops for youth and a concert series for community members. Nydia Rojas and Lupita Infante – two powerful women with booming voices in the mariachi world – will headline the concert. Learn more and purchase your ticket HERE. Senior Safari – Enjoy a Day at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo: July 28th
Join AARP California for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo’s Senior Safari series and enjoy a day at the zoo. This program is designed to help older adults improve their health, avoid social isolation and enjoy a unique environment that stimulates both mind and body. Senior Safari admission and parking are free for those ages 50-plus that arrive before 10 a.m. PT (the park opens to seniors at 9 a.m. PT), and guests are welcome to stay for the day after gates open to the general public. VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION:
The Andrus Award for Community Service: Nomination Period Closes July 15th
Do you know an extraordinary volunteer age 50 or older who deserves recognition? AARP California is seeking nominations for the 2022 Andrus Award for Community Service. This is the association's most prestigious volunteer award that recognizes outstanding individuals who are sharing their experience, talents, and skills to enrich the lives of others. It is presented annually to a California volunteer, age 50 or older, that embodies the principles of AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who believed in the power of ordinary people to do extraordinary things. California’s 2022 Andrus Award for Community Service recipient will be presented with the award and a $1,000 check made out to the non-profit of their choice. Review the eligibility guidelines and submit your online nomination by July 15, 2022 HERE.

Fraud and Scam Prevention 
Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork  or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or get help if you’ve fallen victim. The aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork also offers news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving 
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, steps for caregivers worried about the crisis, legal tips for caregivers during COVID-19, and much more. Individuals taking care of a loved one can also call the AARP Caregiver Support Line at 877-333-5885.
