LOCAL EVENTS:

AACSA Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 40th Anniversary Luncheon – San Jose | January 20th
Join us at the African American Community Service Agency’s (AACSA) annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The luncheon unites community organizations and leaders for a one-of-a-kind affair. Learn more about this event and purchase your ticket HERE.

AARP Andrus Award Ceremony – Pleasant Hill | January 22nd
AARP California and White Pony Express invite you to join us as we present community activist and volunteer, Dr. Carol Weyland Conner with AARP’s most prestigious volunteer award – the Andrus Award. The ceremony will feature recognition of Dr. Conner, appreciation for White Pony Express volunteers and an overview of their Camp Fire relief efforts, followed by an optional tour of the White Pony Express Headquarters. Avenidas Lunar New Year Celebration – Palo Alto | January 30th
Join us as we celebrate the Year of the Rat with Avenidas on Thursday, January 30th from 2:30-4:30pm at the Cubberly Community Center (M-4). While at the celebration, stop by AARP’s table to receive your free giveaway and learn how you can be a smarter consumer and catch frauds and scams! (Save the Date) Smart Consumer Workshop: Learn How to Stop Fraud and Scams – Sunnyvale | February 14th
Consumer fraud is a multi-billion dollar problem in the U.S. and older Americans are often vulnerable targets. Join us for a discussion with award-winning frauds and scams expert, Alan Lai as he shares how you can protect yourself and your family from falling victim. Mr. Lai has an extensive background, serving over 17 years as the director of Crime Victim Services at the Chinese Information and Service Center, as well as in various roles in the probation department and municipal court system as a victim advocate in Seattle, Washington. COMMUNITY MEETINGS:

City of San Jose Task Force Meeting – San Jose | January 30th
Don’t miss an opportunity to weigh in on important issues related to housing in the City of San Jose. Attend the City of San Jose Task Force Meeting and provide community input on recommendations for Urban Village policy changes, the integration of housing in business corridors, commercial spaces requirements for affordable housing and more. The meeting will take place from 6-9 p.m. at San Jose City Hall – Wing – Rooms 118-120 (200 East Santa Clara Street, San Jose).

LOCAL RESOURCES:

Tax Aide
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will offer free tax preparation support from late January to April 15th, with locations throughout California. There are no fees and AARP membership is not required. To learn more and find your nearest Tax-Aide location click HERE.

Drivers Safety Courses
The AARP Smart Driver course is the nation’s first refresher course specifically designed for drivers age 50 and older. In many states, drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. To learn more and find your nearest course click HERE.

LOCAL VOLUNTEERING:

AARP Volunteer Recruitment
AARP is seeking additional volunteers for events and education outreach in San Jose and the Greater Bay Area. Event Team members provide support at community functions, while Education Team members give presentations to small groups on topics such as home repairs to facilitate aging in place, caregiving, and brain health.
