AARP in San Jose is here locally to help you take on 2023 with virtual and in-person events, local resources, vaccine information and more.

LOCAL VIRTUAL EVENTS: 
Tea & Coffee Tuesdays – Navigating Social Security in 2023: January 10th  
Join us for a chat with Charlene Wall about Social Security. Learn about eligibility, how and when to apply, steps to take if you’re denied and new changes in 2023. Learn more and register HERE. This virtual event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Hop to It! HomeFit Ready in the Year of the Rabbit: January 20th
Kick off the Chinese New Year by making sure your home is ready and safe for entertaining loved ones!  Join us as we explore Chinese New Year traditions and highlights from our HomeFit program. The AARP HomeFit program is designed to educate older adults and their families on how to make their living spaces more age-friendly and safe for people of all ages and abilities.  Learn more and register HERE. Avenidas Re-Inventing Life After 50: January 21st
Join Avenidas for a fun day filled with new ideas and experiences focused on healthy aging! Attendees will have their choice of one morning session and one afternoon session. Topics will include healthy living over 50, relationships, and the roadmap to retirement. Additionally, there will be exhibitors and several short activity demos, including Jazzercise, Feldenkrais, Pickleball, photo editing, composting and more. Lunch will be provided by Chef Julien's Redwood Cafe, and the day will close with a wine and cheese reception. This NEW conference is geared towards the 50 to 70 crowd, but all ages are welcome! Attendees should dress comfortably, wear sneakers or workout shoes, and bring a water bottle. Learn more and register HERE. This in-person event requires a purchased ticket.

Contractor Fraud & Scams with Jason Collom: January 26th
Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from contractor and repair scam! Join us as we hear from Senior Inspector, Jason Collom with the San Francisco District Attorney’s office. Inspector Collom will share tips to tell if a contractor or repair person is fraudulent or operating a scam, as well as how to report such an incident to the authorities. LOCAL VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT: 
AARP San Jose Advocacy Team (SJAT) Volunteer Recruitment: NOW – January 15, 2023
Are you a San Jose resident and want to help improve the livability of the city by advocating for programs, services and polices that are important to people ages 50-plus and their families? Apply to become an AARP San Jose Advocacy Team volunteer! Learn more and apply HERE. For questions, contact Ameen Khan at alkhan@aarp.org. The application period closes on Sunday, January 15.

Stay up to date by subscribing and listening to In Clear Terms with AARP California™ - a free podcast that focuses on issues impacting Californians of all ages. The podcast features conversations with community leaders, elected officials, and AARP staff and volunteers to help you understand critical issues that impact our state. Most recent episodes highlight conversations on social isolation and loneliness during the holidays, and common frauds and scams to be aware of this time of year.

Fraud and Scam Prevention 
Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork  or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or get help if you’ve fallen victim. The aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork also offers news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving 
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, steps for caregivers worried about the crisis, legal tips for caregivers during COVID-19, and much more. Individuals taking care of a loved one can also call the AARP Caregiver Support Line at 877-333-5885.
