LOCAL EVENTS:

Seniors’ Agenda Network Summit – Sunnyvale | February 6th
Twice a year, the Seniors’ Agenda Network Summit brings together nearly 200 professional, aging advocates, and elected officials to actively engage in a meaningful learning opportunity to strengthen the community. The February 2020 summit will focus on older adults and transportation. Hear from transportation experts and guest speakers as we dive deep into mobility! SPUR Forum – San Jose | February 6th
Join AARP for a lunch forum on Preparing for an Aging Silicon Valley, hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR). AARP California Associate State Director, Fred Buzo will present on the Longevity Economy (the economic power and contributions of those age 50+). San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival & Parade – San Francisco | February 8th & 9th
AARP is excited to celebrate the Year of the Rat at the Chinese New Year Festival and Parade in San Francisco. This weekend-long celebration will feature cultural activists, delicious food, live performances and more! Smart Consumer Workshop: Learn How to Stop Fraud and Scams – Sunnyvale | February 14th
Consumer fraud is a multi-billion dollar problem in the U.S. and older Americans are often vulnerable targets. Join us for a discussion with award-winning frauds and scams expert, Alan Lai as he shares how you can protect yourself and your family from falling victim. Mr. Lai has an extensive background, serving over 17 years as the director of Crime Victim Services at the Chinese Information and Service Center, as well as in various roles in the probation department and municipal court system as a victim advocate in Seattle, Washington. Hearts & Minds Activity Center Open House & Resource Fair – San Jose | February 22nd
Join us for the Hearts & Minds Activity Center’s Open House on February 22 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Learn about the Activity Center’s adult day program and support services. TEK Workshops - San Jose | February 21st
The AARP TEK (Technology, Education and Knowledge) workshops are an opportunity to grow your confidence in using mobile technology to gather information, take photos and stay connected with family and friends. At these FREE workshops, all participants will get hands-on experience with devices, and a free touchscreen stylus pen. We encourage you to participate in both the “intro” and “beyond the basics” courses! Space is limited. Registration is required.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS & INFORMATION:

City of San Jose Task Force Meeting – San Jose | February 27th
Don’t miss an opportunity to weigh in on important issues related to housing in the City of San Jose. Attend the City of San Jose Task Force Meeting and provide community input on recommendations for Urban Village policy changes, the integration of housing in business corridors, commercial spaces requirements for affordable housing and more. The meeting will take place from 6-9 p.m. at San Jose City Hall – Wing – Rooms 118-120 (200 East Santa Clara Street, San Jose).

LOCAL RESOURCES:

Tax Aide
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will offer free tax preparation support from late January to April 15th, with locations throughout California. There are no fees and AARP membership is not required. To learn more and find your nearest Tax-Aide location click HERE.

Drivers Safety Courses
The AARP Smart Driver course is the nation’s first refresher course specifically designed for drivers age 50 and older. In many states, drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. To learn more and find your nearest course click HERE.

Protect Yourself & Your Loved Ones from Imposter Scams
In February, AARP is sharing resources and information to help you protect yourself and your loved ones from falling victim to imposter scams. Impostor scams are exactly what they sound like — crooks pose as someone else to try to convince you to send them money. This is by far the most common form of fraud reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). For tips and resources to help protect yourself from impostor scams, visit www.AARP.org/FraudWatchNetwork or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 877-908-3360 to report a scam or if you think you’ve become a victim of a scam.

LOCAL VOLUNTEERING:

AARP Volunteer Recruitment
AARP is seeking additional volunteers for events and education outreach in San Jose and the Greater Bay Area. Event Team members provide support at community functions, while Education Team members give presentations to small groups on topics such as home repairs to facilitate aging in place, caregiving, and brain health.
