AARP in San Jose is here locally to help you take on 2022 with virtual events, local resources, vaccine information and more.

LOCAL VIRTUAL EVENTS: 
Drive-Thru Shred Event: Free Personal Document Shredding: August 6th
Join AARP, County of Santa Clara Adult Protective Services, and the Financial Abuse Specialist Team (F.A.S.T) for a FREE drive-through shred event as we work together to combat fraud and identity theft in our community. At our shred event we will help you dispose of unwanted confidential documents in a safe and secure manner. It only takes a few minutes! All you have to do is (1) register in advance and (2) on August 6th arrive to the Santa Clara County Office of Social Services parking lot using the W. Julian St. entrance, pop open your trunk, and we will help you shred and dispose of up to two file size boxes of paper. Learn more and register HERE. Scam Chat Wednesdays: August 10th
Join us and the Department of Financial Protection & Innovation for Scam Chat Wednesdays! Learn about the latest online and phone scams. Receive pro tips to keep your information protected. Learn more and register HERE. This virtual event is FREE and open to the public. Registration is required.

San Jose Jazz Summer Fest: August 12th-14th
Join us for the annual San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2022, one the most iconic music events in U.S., featuring artists from around the world and Bay Area. Hear music ranging in genre from jazz, blues, salsa, Latin, R&B, and more! There were also be food, vendors and intergenerational activities for all. Learn more and purchase your tickets HERE.

Downsize and Declutter with Kris & Diane– Virtual Community Education Workshop: August 19th
Do you need help decluttering your home? Or are you planning to downsize and not sure what to keep or let go? Join us for a fun interactive presentation as we explore why stuff is so important for some people and learn practical, easy-to-follow tips on downsizing and decluttering. Compassion in Action – Embracing the World with Hope: August 20th
Join the Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care (CACCC) as they host their annual Compassion in Action event focused on end of life care. This virtual event will feature keynote speaker BJ Miller, MD, – author of A Beginner’s Guide to the End – hospice and palliative care physician, co-founder of Mettle Health, and renowned thought leader on the topic of living well in the face of illness and death. The program will include a panel of other esteemed hospice and palliative care professionals. The event will be offered in both English, Mandarin and Cantonese.  Learn more and register HERE. Senior Safari – Enjoy a Day at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo: August 25th   Join AARP California for Happy Hollow Park & Zoo’s Senior Safari series and enjoy a day at the zoo. This program is designed to help older adults improve their health, avoid social isolation and enjoy a unique environment that stimulates both mind and body. Senior Safari admission and parking are free for those ages 50-plus that arrive before 10 a.m. PT (the park opens to seniors at 9 a.m. PT), and guests are welcome to stay for the day after gates open to the general public. Silicon Valley Pride Parade & Festival: August 27th-28th
Join us for Silicon Valley Pride, also known as San Jose Pride, an annual LGBTQ+ pride celebration that will take place in Downtown San Jose. Enjoy live music, food, vendors and more! We also invite you to stop by our booth during the August 27th Night Festival and August 28th Day Festival to learn about our work in community and enter for a chance to win a giant, inflatable unicorn pool floaty. VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION:
The Andrus Award for Community Service: Nomination Period EXTENDED – August 12th  
Do you know an extraordinary volunteer age 50 or older who deserves recognition? AARP California is seeking nominations for the 2022 Andrus Award for Community Service. This is the association's most prestigious volunteer award that recognizes outstanding individuals who are sharing their experience, talents, and skills to enrich the lives of others. It is presented annually to a California volunteer, age 50 or older, that embodies the principles of AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who believed in the power of ordinary people to do extraordinary things. California’s 2022 Andrus Award for Community Service recipient will be presented with the award and a $1,000 check made out to the non-profit of their choice. Fraud and Scam Prevention 
Visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork  or call the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or get help if you’ve fallen victim. The aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork also offers news, tips, and online learning videos on how to spot and stop common scams.

Caregiving 
AARP supports millions of family caregivers by providing free resources and tools. View and download the AARP Prepare to Care caregiving guide, offered in English, Spanish and Chinese at aarp.org/caregiving. The website also features six questions loved ones should ask nursing homes during the health crisis, steps for caregivers worried about the crisis, legal tips for caregivers during COVID-19, and much more. Individuals taking care of a loved one can also call the AARP Caregiver Support Line at 877-333-5885.
