AARP in Los Angeles brings you a series of events to celebrate with your family the end of the year.

Español |AARP in Los Angeles has prepared a series of events for the fall and winter seasons. Join a screening of a highly acclaimed and awarded film about day Día de los Muertos, walk or cycle your way through our last open-street event of the year, CicLAvia, attend a concert, or take a hands-on cooking class and create treats traditionally eaten during the holidays in México. Most of our events are free, but we highly recommend registering in advance.

OCTOBER:
Movie Screening: Dia de Los Muertos | LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes | 501 N. Main St. |Los Angeles, CA 90012 |Sunday, October 27 | 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

AARP members and non-members are invited to a free screening of an animated film about Dia de Los Muertos. A cartoon story about family, fun and adventure, where a young aspiring musician, named Miguel, embarks on an extraordinary journey to the magical land of his ancestors. There, the cheating but charming Hector becomes an unexpected friend who helps Miguel discover the mysteries behind his family's stories and traditions. Performance artist, Astrid Hadad whose politically infused work is a provocative mixture of ranchera, street theater and cabaret will draw on traditional Mexican iconography to express themes of activism, protest and struggle against colonialism. This event is for ages 21 and over. RSVP is required and will be honored on a first-come-first-serve basis. A standby line will accommodate walk-ups, after 7:45 pm RSVPs will be released to the standby line. This event is free but you must register in advance. Plática (A Talk): The Art of Data | LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes |501 North Main St. |Los Angeles, CA 90012 | Thursday, November 14 | 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the UCLA School of Medicine, challenges narratives about diversity, race, and health through rigorous use of quantitative data sets, including population statistics and consumer demographics. Utilizing similar data, Linda Vallejo creates thought-provoking art that questions stereotypes and empowers Latinx communities. Join these two visionaries as they exchange ideas about the past, present, and future of the Latinx community mano a mano. Presented as part of the exhibition "Linda Vallejo: Brown Belongings." The holiday season is a time when friends and family get together to celebrate, and food and drinks play a big part during the festivities. During this hands-on cooking class, participants will create confections and treats traditionally eaten during the holidays in México, Ensalada de navidad and polvorones. Guest speaker and chef: Maite Gómez-Rejon of ArtBites. This is a paid event. Join us at the open-streets event CicLAvia, as they transform Reseda, Winnetka, and Canoga Park into recreational space for the day. Streets will be closed to cars and open for people of all ages and abilities to ride, walk, stroll, roll, run, and smile!
