AARP Georgia Celebrates Local Hero, Sparkle Adams
During Black History Month and beyond, AARP Georgia is shining a spotlight on local leaders who have helped their communities survive and thrive. AARP believes that the efforts of one person can truly make an impact. But when our efforts drive change for the greater good, we thrive together.
AARP Georgia is proud to honor retired United States Air Force Master Sergeant Sparkle Kornegay Adams of Forest Park. Ms. Adams was inducted into the Georgia Military Veterans' Hall of Fame in 2021 for her lifetime of service, particularly to Veterans and youth.
During her 25+ years of active and reserve military service and her subsequent career with the federal government, Master Sergeant Adams dedicated herself to volunteerism within her church, her community, her state and her nation while positively impacting hundreds of lives.
Among her many accomplishments, Ms. Adams served as the Mayor of Forest Park, the President of the Forest Park Kiwanis Club, the public relations director of the Atlanta chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, and as a member of the Walk of Heroes/Veterans War Memorial board. Ms. Adams also served veterans and her faith community as the co-chair of the Ben Hill United Methodist Church Veterans Ministry and as the President of the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the National Association of Black Military Women.
In 2019, Ms. Adams' service was further recognized when the Georgia General Assembly dedicated a bridge in her honor. The bridge is located on Interstate 75 at State Route 331 in Clayton County.
Perhaps Ms. Adams most lasting legacy will be her vision and creation of the Walking in Authority Team Council (WIATC) which educates teens and adults in leadership, accountability and empowerment. To date, WIATC is credited with 547 teen graduates, many of whom have received college scholarships.
The personification of grace, love and selfless service to others, Sparkle Adams has truly made our state, nation and world a better place because of her life.
