AARP Foundation Tax-Aide and Property Tax Aide Offers Free Resources

Posted on 02/06/24

AARP South Dakota works to help individuals 50-plus make sure their money lives as long as they do. That is why we fight for measures to help provide financial security, such as Senate Bill 28, which passed during the 2024 Legislative Session.

This bill provides property tax and sales tax refunds to low-income older adults and to people with disabilities.

Property taxes are the single most burdensome tax for low-income and older homeowners. Many of our state's elderly citizens have lived in their homes for generations. As their property values have appreciated, so have their property taxes. Furthermore, older adults often live on fixed incomes and cannot afford the yearly increases in their property taxes while meeting their basic needs for food, medicine and utilities.

AARP Foundation Property Tax-Aide is a free resource that helps homeowners and renters more easily find, understand and apply for property tax relief. This website features a map allowing individuals to click on their state to find programs for which they may be eligible.

South Dakotans can also find information on available relief programs on the South Dakota Department of Revenue website.

Help for Filling Income Taxes

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is also providing free in-person and virtual tax assistance and preparation now through April 15 throughout South Dakota.

The nation’s largest free, volunteer-based tax assistance and preparation program helped secure more than $1.1 billion in refunds for more than 1.5 million taxpayers last year. Tax-Aide is offered in conjunction with the IRS, and AARP membership is not required.

Even modest refunds can make an impact, especially for vulnerable older adults. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide helps put money back in the pockets of people every year by making sure they don’t miss out on the credits and deductions they have earned.

This program provides tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a special focus on taxpayers who are over 50 or have low to moderate income. Tax-Aide volunteers are located nationwide and are trained and IRS-certified every year to make sure they know about and understand the latest changes and additions to the tax code.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers can help with most, but not all, tax returns. If you have an extremely complicated return, such as one that involves a small business with employees, rental income, or alternative minimum tax (AMT), Tax-Aide may not be able to help.
