AARP Florida Names Christine Hamacher 2025 Andrus Award Recipient

Posted on 12/17/25

TAMPA BAY, FL — AARP Florida has selected Christine Hamacher, co-founder and Artistic & Executive Director of SAGES Plays with Purpose, as the recipient of the 2025 Andrus Award for Community Service. The award – our organization’s most prestigious – honors individuals aged 50 and older for exceptional volunteer service and community impact.

Through her leadership, Hamacher has:

  • Established partnerships with senior centers, schools, and nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay area to expand SAGES programming and strengthen intergenerational connections.
  • Built a dedicated volunteer base within SAGES, transforming participants into passionate advocates for older adults.
  • Fostered an inclusive, age-friendly community where older adults are recognized as mentors, storytellers, and vital contributors to society.

SAGES Plays with Purpose is a Tampa-based nonprofit that uses theater to elevate the voices and experiences of older adults, addressing issues such as ageism, isolation, caregiving, health, and community connection.

“We thank Christine and offer our congratulations to her and all the 2025 Andrus Award Nominees. Her work with SAGES directly supports AARP’s vision of a society where people age with dignity, purpose, and connection. This esteemed award reflects her strong commitment to driving positive social change in the Sunshine State,” said Jeff Johnson, AARP Florida State Director.

The Andrus Award for Community Service is named for AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, whose motto “To serve, not to be served” remains central to AARP’s mission.
